And The Winner Is…
Yesterday night was spent like all my Sunday nights are spent…in front of my computer. This Sunday night was worthy to be written about because it was the night of the 2012 Golden Globes. The Golden Globes marks the beginning of the Award season. Technically, that was the People Choice Awards but I’m talking about the ones that are “oh-so prestigious” (said in a British accent). Although, I’m a huge cinema lover; I’m more likely to remember what so-and-so wore than who won what. (Cue fashion intro)
While watching E!’s red carpet special I noticed certain similarities in the dresses which gave me an Idea: Instead of simply assembling a Best dressed list, I thought it’d be interesting to create categories and pick a winner from each. And just like the Golden Globes’ nominees, they’re all “winners” but only one takes the gold.
Category: Pretty in Lilac
Nominees: Shailene Woodley & Jessica Alba
Winner
Shailene Woodley was nothing short of breath taking in an angelic Marchesa design. The criss-cross detailing filled up her petite frame while the tulle draping accented her silhouette. Woodley finished it off with gently swept hair and barely-there make-up. The 20-year old best supporting actress nominee left an enchanting mark during her first Golden Globes.
Runner-Up
Golden Globe presenter Jessica Alba strutted her fabulous post-baby body in a lilac Gucci embroidered dress. There are 2 things about the dress that aren’t pleasing. One) the dress slithers straight down failing to show off Alba’s enviable curves. Two) the embroidered patches that cover it appear more cluttered than complementary. Now, the lavender sash-esque part of the dress that lies under her bust line is genius; if only those embroidered pieces were smaller, placed closer together and began right below her waist… BAM hourglass!
Category: Plunging Tulle
Nominees: Rooney Mara & Emma Stone
Winner
Emma Stone. When I first saw the thriving actress’ custom-made Lanvin gown I wasn’t quite sure what to make of it, but it had my undivided attention. When reviewing the pictures online, I realized just how striking the dress is. The rich colour combination of plum in the center and back and fuchsia at the sides made this a clear winner. Then there are those rhinestone encrusted shoulders that are bold but not obnoxious. Finally, the sheer material demurely bared Stone’s porcelain skin making everyone do a double take. (Yes that is an Eagle belt; go big or go home kids)
Runner Up
Rooney Mara is naturally captivating and doesn’t have to do much to stand out. I was disappointed in her dress choice; a black Nina Ricci gown with a plunging tulle neckline. I adore the top part of the dress; the tiny bows holding it all together work wonders in creating a provocative yet classic feel. BUT, the material used in the bottom matched with the colour black leaves me grieving.
P.S: I’ve been following Mara’s fashion choices while she was promoting The Girl With Dragon Tattoo and she’s worn exceptional black numbers. So there is no excuse for showing up at the Golden Globes looking like someone’s plus one when you’re a BEST ACTRESS NOMINNEE.
Category: Animal Instinct
Nominees: Evan Rachel Woods & Dianna Agron
Winner
Dianna Agron takes the title for BEST DRESSED at this year’s award. The Glee beauty was all passion and drama in a red laser-cut Giles gown. Agron took the crown by rising above a sea of mermaid dresses and blush hues. Her beautifully sculpted gown started off with graceful Swan designs at both extremes of her collar bone and continued with a compilation of origami-inspired flittering layers. With old-Hollywood coiffed hair, red lips and minimal accessories, the TV starlet was the epitome of a movie star.
Runner Up
Evan Rachel Wood. Strictly speaking Swans are more elegant than Peacocks and that’s that. I’m not a PETA member but even I’m concerned about the number of birds sacrificed to make Wood’s Gucci gown (I kid, I kid). I admire Wood’s daring sense-of-style but next time let’s be a little more fierce and a little less ferocious.
Alright Darlings, let me know if you agree, disagree and tell me who your personal favorite was at the 2012 Golden Globes.
